Curious to think that a 'girl' this glamorous would be looking for guys on the internet in the first place, never mind writing to guys first! For f***'s sake.
I happen to know from my female friends in Stockholm that when a nice-looking girl posts a profile on a popular dating website, for example match.com, she gets 20-30 mails a DAY! from all over the world. Some guys even send nude pics etcetc. Good looking girls don't need to accost guys on the internet, it's the guys who do the chasing. Then the girls pick and choose who they want to reply to.
I also happen to know that the majority of Russian girls would never DREAM of writing to a guy first. It's just not done.
But it certainly is tempting to think otherwise.

For any newbies on the thread:
GENERAL INFO ABOUT RUSSIAN DATING SCAMS:
If several or more of these criteria apply to your Boris (the beautiful Russian 'girl' that is supposedly writing to you), resist the temptation to help 'the poor girl' by sending her money. You're really writing to a sleazy guy sitting in a smoky room in Yoshtar Ola, Mari-El Republic, or thereabouts, with a bunch of other sleazy guys spamming indiscriminately on laptops.
# 'girl' writes to you first on a dating site...especially a free one (or an email appears out of nowhere in your mailbox). Real Russian girls are rarely so bold as to write to you first. (unless you're obviously very attractive or rich :). Plus if they're looking for a partner, they generally prefer him to be Russian speaking and live in Russia. Much more convenient!
# girl's much too young for you (or too good to be true/looks like a model/porno star)....although I have noticed a recent tendency for some scammers to use photos of slightly 'less attractive' girls.
# girl has some far-fetched excuses for you not visiting her in Russia (criminal city, not the Russian custom, terrorism, etc). ALL BULLSHIT! Actually, the normal way to meet a Russian girl is to visit her in her city first!
# scammers rarely have children, but all the real Russian women I've ever met on the internet did.
# photos are too revealing (can't be a respectable girl). Respectability is very important for most Russian girls.
# most of the pics are old and a little bit faded with a curiously grainy quality that soon becomes easy to recognise (overuse?). A serious girl who's looking for a partner, would save up and go to a professional to have a photo set done, and/or borrow a digicam at least (dates should also be on the photos you receive). My fiancée went to a professional. Russian girls aren't all that poor anymore.
# girl claims not to have a mobile phone. Very unlikely!!! fer f***'s sake.....do you know a single girl without a mobile phone? Even poor Russian girls can't do without one, they're much cheaper than in Europe and a Megafon telephone card doesn't cost that much either. You should be able to call her. On the other hand, not having a landline or a computer is quite common.
# very long rambling/ecstatic form letters with a strange format, punctation and layout written in scamlish. (world's worst Babelfish copy)
# writes everyday in English (how does she have time if she's working? + most Russians can hardly speak a word of English). Anyway, what's the point of finding a girl if you can't communicate with her, at least on a basic level?
# doesn't answer direct questions (sometimes factual mistakes in the letter)
# falls in 'love' very quickly. Don't let your ego or loneliness pull the wool over your eyes. She doesn't know you. You could be an axe murderer.
# uses a proxy server to hide his/her location, ie a SOCKS server / GPRS Internet. if you can't trace 'her' IP, it's 100% scam. If she uses gmail, be suspicious too cos you won't be able to trace the IP. Hotmail and yahoo are acceptable if she'll chat with you on messenger, otherwise why does she have a non-cyrillic email account?
MOST IMPORTANT...if you get this far:
# wants money for a 'visa' and/or maybe tickets, but IT'S VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR A SINGLE RUSSIAN GIRL TO GET A TOURIST VISA TO A WESTERN COUNTRY!
She can get a sponsored visa with your help, but then she needs a personal letter of invitation from you, a copy of your passport photo page, a proof of your residence in your home country, a completed sponsor's application form (also from you)....not including the documents that she has to fill in herself. All of these she has to drop off at your national embassy in Moscow WITH PREPAID TICKETS and wait 10 working days. That's how it works in the Schengen countries anyway, and in the USA and Canada it's almost as complicated. Anyway, a normal tourist visa + travel costs + hotel rooms would set her back 2000+ US dollars for a trip to the US. She should be asking you for a lot of money! Why should it be so easy for a gorgeous sexy girl just to jump on a plane and fall into bed with you? Be realistic.
NB...you should check your national embassy website in Moscow for visa prices and procedures.
There are several variations on the 'send me money' scam. There are a few scammers that are more patient and professional. There are even a few real girls scamming, and professional gold-diggers. One or two (mostly in the Ukraine) are not even afraid to use their true identities. These scammers are harder to spot.
But a ground rule is: if you are looking for a Russian wife/partner, you must be prepared to travel to Russia to meet her. And if she turns out to be a professional gold-digger, which has never happened to me personally or anyone I know, you should try to be philosophical and treat it as an exotic trip to a foreign country, have fun anyway, and try not to waste too much money on her.
There are actually hundreds of perfectly nice...real...Russian girls, but you have to go and get them in Russia.

Hi anonymous from Sweden!
Being a Russian woman (NOT a scam though) I have to confess that I've read with a great interest your GENERAL INFO and here is my opinion. Some of your statements are correct BUT some are totally wrong. And I sure want all the comminity to be aware of it, too!
Ok, writing first to a man on some dating site. If I see an interesting professional male that seems ot be a match because of his background, educational level, hobbies and a picture posted (of course!) I can have the courage to contact him first. Rarely - but happens! Same with other women, I guess...But normally it's Russian tradition to wait for a man to make the first move.
You guys should know that there is a big percentage of women here (mostly in big cities like Moscow and St.Pete) with higher i.e University education and with specialization in foreign economics/ languages. Thus we DO speak fluent English, or French or German.
And it happens that not all of us are taken! So, many women that are busy with their careers working for the offices of foreign companies, travel agencies, hotels, etc. often have it all : beauty and brains. And good working foreign language (often two of them!) And lack of time to meet men in real life - so same like everybody's else we use Internet to communicate with people.
Now about children. In big cities most attractive women in their 20-s, 30-s , 40-s DON'T
have children! I don't have them and I work for the big company with mostly women on board (what a shame!) . So only few of them have kids! The situation is changing these days BUT single motherhood was always considered a shame in our culture. That's a reason why many of us don't have them.
Now about being too good to be true. You may have heard that Russia is a country of beautiful women. I agree - we have a high concentration of them here! Every day on the streets you meet a number of tall, long-legged and very attractive women of all ages. They potentially COULD be models in many other countries but they are just students, office employees, etc. here. Every second girl with great looks can't be a model in a city of Moscow...Why? Moscow simply does not need that many...LOL!
Finally. About income and travels. Those of us who work for foreign companies, big Russian companies and banks, travel agencies, etc. earn good money allowing us to travel. We can travel to any destination we wish - it's just a matter of how much we spend at the travel agency on a tour (or simply a visa). LOTS of us do so and we don't need anybody's help! Probably just need a good company awaiting for us someplace!
So guys I will highly appreciate if you note my comments.
BUT being careful and cautious is ALWAYS a MUST. Same with us.
Olya from Russian Federation, (previous page) Zdravsvuite!
Thanks for your post
1) ''(NOT a scam though)' I feel very bad you introduce yourself this way - People in their right minds distinguish between real girls and scammers, Russia or any country for that matter
2) In my case, I had one and only one case of a real Russian girl initiate the contact. Our mutual interests were numerous. But 3 are confirmed scammers, and the rest at various stages, possibly scammers, but I wait until there's independent confirmation till they actually scam someone else.
3) Yes, it can happen, albeit rarely, a good-looking, well-eduacated Russian girl could initiate the contact. But when scammers saturate the thinking faculty of guys like me, the only honourable thing to do, was to request the real girl to find a different boyfriend. I could only imagine how nuch this girl would have cried, at being denied the opportunity to meet me and the decide da or nyet. Scammers can destroy prospects for not only foreigners, but their own compatriot girls.
4) I keep advising about isolating scammers. One of my scammers, Elena is from Perm. But simply googling these two words will also find former shakhmatny champion, Elena, also from Perm. Wrong! Wrong! We want defence against scammers only by sharpening searches.
Spasibo for reading my post, and if you continue to post,
Eddie from Sweden
Olya from Russian Federation ...(Could that be you Seregae? come back to plague me?).
Thank you for posting. But you have slightly missed the point. My info was not specifically about Russian women, it was about scammers and the scam business = cкамерство!!
And my info was not about Moscow, because in my opinion, Moscow is not typical for Russia and is therefore not really Russia. In fact there is only one reference to Moscow in my post.
1. I'm afraid you sound like a typical Moscow elitist. Do you honestly believe that the rest of Russia is like Moscow (and to a lesser extent like St Petersburg?) Please do some travelling in your own country. Have you been to Ural? or Tatarstan? Or Bashkortostan? Siberia? Plus 95% of Russian dating scammers do NOT claim to be from Moscow or St Petersburg. Why could that be? Because even in the USA, people know that Moscow is a rich, modern, emancipated city....it's really in a world of its own. But travel more than 50 kms outside Moscow and it's a different world.
2. Please do not patronize me. Do you think I have never been to your country before? Do you think that a иностранец can't form impressions about your country. I have been there many times, and twice in the last year. My last visit was in April. And I have been baiting Russian dating scammers on the Internet for two years. All of the info I posted is based on my own personal experience, research, my travels and contacts with Russian people. Not Moscow.
Therefore, although I respect your opinion, you say 'some statements are correct BUT some are totally wrong', I can't see what I have posted that does not apply to the 99% of Russia that is not Moscow.
Outside Moscow, it is very rare for a real Russian girl to contact a man on the internet. But like most countries Russia is slowly accepting this form of making contact. Even for Moscow women it's unusual to make first contact, (unless as I said, the man is obviously rich and good looking).... unless she is a professional gold digger. Sweden is probably the most emancipated country in the world, and even Swedish women rarely make first contact.
Outside Moscow, a large proportion of Russian women also have a university degree, especially those older than 30 that grew up in Soviet, but very few speak any English at all. In Yekaterinburg, Russia's 3rd city, during a 2 week visit, I met 3 or 4 people who could speak any English at all. But this is not a criticism, only an observation. Even in Moscow, relatively few people speak English considering it is such a large cosmopol. On one occasion, at the information desk of Sheremetyevo domestic airport, the assistant didn't speak English, only Russian etcetc....and the same at many train stations.
About children, outside Moscow and St Petersburg, Russian people are generally very family oriented. And in MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, most of the serious Russian girls ON THE INTERNET looking for a partner also had children. Of course I've had contact with other women who didn't, but most of those were time wasters. And of course, in Moscow there are lots of career women, without children, just like in any big, modern city.
About good-looking, educated, women... yes, there are plenty in Moscow and it is refeshing that some of them flirt, even on the metro. But there is a much higher proportion in Stockholm, as it happens. Remember that I'm not originally from Sweden and have an objective eye. Furthermore, it would be rather difficult to persuade a Moscow woman to relocate to a foreign city if her prospective partner doesn't earn an executive salary, because in Moscow Russian women can earn quite a good salary, but despite their superficial air of emancipation, most Russian women would still prefer to be supported when they get married. (I have several emails from different Moscow women to underpin my point here).
So, I will repeat, my information was GENERAL INFO ABOUT RUSSIAN DATING SCAMS, not about Russian women in general, and definitely not Moscow women. I stand by its accuracy. My references to Russian women were only to emphasize my points about scammers.
